Five EDM Artists to Watch in 2013

Last year saw a massive surge of electronic dance music (EDM) to the front lines of mainstream popularity and 2013 has already proven the trend is not going anywhere. There has been an abundance of new releases and a massive collection of up-and-coming talent flooding the industry with impressive potential. The year is not even half over and we can’t even count how many young DJs and producers are headed for superstardom – but some have definitely stood out above the rest. Here are five EDM artists to keep an eye on this year.

Danny Avila

Danny-Avila

Genre: Progressive house

To get a residency in Ibiza is usually a career highlight for a DJ, but at the ripe old age of 17, Danny Avila has already scored a spot on the magical island, which caught the attention of everyone, including Fedde Le Grand and Tiesto – who calls him the “Spanish SUPER Talent.” The October release of his single “Breaking Your Fall,” and a new prime time spot for his radio show has given him a nice introduction to the US market. But it is the recent announcement that Avila’s upcoming residency at Las Vegas megaclub Hakkasan, which ranks him as the youngest resident DJ in Vegas history, that is sure to catapult him to stateside stardom.

Andrew Rayel

Andrew RayelGenre: Trance

When Armin Van Buuren, arguably one of the world’s most influential artists in dance music, says to pay attention to someone, its in your best interest to pay attention. So when Andrew Rayel’s track “How Do I Know” was named one of Van Buuren’s top 20 tracks of this past year, the trance producer cemented his name on the map.

Hot off the heels of another big hit “Aeon of Revenge,” several successful remixes and a few stops on the A State of Trance 600 tour circuit, Rayel has proved he is a rising star in Armada’s arsenal of young talent and definitely one to watch closely in 2013.

Zedd

ZeddGenre: Electro-House

He’s the first EDM artist to perform live on Letterman, one of MTV’s “artists to watch” for 2013, and he’s newly signed to Interscope records. Zedd may only have one full length album and a couple of EPs under his belt, but his resume is also not short – having remixed The Black Eyed Peas, Skrillex and Justin Bieber, where he co-produced  his hit “Beauty and a Beat.” To top it off, Zedd produced his buddy Lady Gaga’s ARTPOP album in its entirety. Not bad for a guy who is only 23.

Stardom seems inevitable for young talent and it is respectfully well deserved. Singles like “Spectrum” and “Clarity” show he not only is a rare talent but also knows how to work a room with a  bonafide dance floor hit.

Julian Jordan

Julian JordanGenre: Electro-house

They must be putting something in the water over there because the amount of Dutch DJs and Producers dominating the EDM genre is overwhelming (4 of the top 10 and 7 of the top 20 in DJ Mag’s infamous top 100 list are Dutch). Now newcomer Julian Jordan, under the guidance of his mentor Sander van Doorn,  is showing the EDM world there is another Dutch star in the making.

His track, “Rock Steady” climbed to the top 10 on Beatport charts with ease and his collaboration with Sander “Kangaroo” was a dancefloor favorite worldwide. Both have earned Jordan the support and attention of industry heavyweights. We can expect some massive synths and pumping basslines from Jordan in 2013.

Robert Delong

robert delongGenre: Experimental Dance

One of 2013’s fastest rising electronic artists is Los Angeles based Robert DeLong, who’s experimental dance/ alternative electronic style has gained massive amounts of buzz. Utilizing MIDI interfaces and mixing live while he performs, DeLong plays keyboards, drum pads, drum set, laptops, and even gaming controllers, which showcases his truly innovative style of electronic music. With the release of his debut EP “Global Concepts,” and a spot to perform at Coachella this year – 2013 is looking like a sure bet for Robert DeLong to become a star.

Five New Dance Music Songs in Heavy Rotation Right Now

Spring is here! It’s time to shed our winter coats, opt for cocktails that slush and add a shiny new playlist to our respective iPods. With back-to-back music festivals underway (ie SXSW, Ultra and Coachella), it’s not surprising that we’re being pleasantly inundated with sweet new tunes for all to enjoy.

In order to preemptively honor your booze-fueled, poolside shenanigans this weekend, here is a compilation of the top five new dance songs that are getting a lot of repeat play right now. These songs will have you fist pumping in your sleep. Grab your dancing cleats, turn up the volume, press play and enjoy!

1. “Meet Her in Miami” – Gareth Emery
First up is Brit DJ and one of a few personal favorites, Gareth Emery, who has revamped the classic dance beat “Meet Her at the Love Parade” from Da Hool. The song is masterfully re-purposed and designed to really get you off your feet and onto the dancefloor. How fitting that he’s changed it to “Miami”, since he will be spending a solid chunk of spring break time in the Magic City. Challenge accepted Gareth, we’d love to meet you in Miami.

2. “Summertime Sadness” – Cedric Gervais
French House DJ, Cedric Gervais, also has a new song for us this spring. It’s a slight diversion from last year’s controversial hit “Molly”, but just as play-worthy. Here he is, adding some sultry beats to the already enchanting “Summertime Sadness” by Lana Del Rey. Is anyone else in love? *Swoon*

3. “Together We Are” – Arty (Featuring Chris James)
Feel good jams are far and few between – but the universe has done us a solid with Arty’s new dance hit “Together We Are” featuring Chris James. At only 23, Arty has already made an indelible mark on the dance music scene and this song is only one in a succession of chart-toppers from Arty the Great. “Together We Are” will no doubt penetrate the club circuit in no time. Prepare to see glittery masses hand-in-hand, dance-battling it out with smiles from ear to cocktail.

4. “Black Room Boy” – Above & Beyond
Never ceasing to amaze, Above & Beyond has remained en pointe since their inception.  “Black Room Boy”, their latest single, is no exception. The delicious vocals are driven from Above & Beyond’s Tony McGuinness for your voracious consumption. Music that is entertaining and transformative is a rarity, but leave it up to the trance trio to give birth to the musical equivalent of a unicorn. This song will be all the “group therapy” you need this spring.

5. “Clarity” – Zedd Featuring Foxes
“Clarity” is third single from Zedd’s Clarity album, and already a chart-topping success. This song is dangerously addictive and easily one of the favorite songs of 2013 so far. Equal parts club banger and poignant ballad, this hit is a music lover’s dream. To further show off his musical prowess, Zedd released a stripped-down version of “Clarity” relying solely on a piano and the angel sounds of Foxes. Perfection!

Check out all these songs and more on Slacker’s 2013 Ultra Music Festival Station, which is set for two weekends this month: the 15th through the 17th, and the 22nd through the 24th.
