A Flock Of Seagulls: Where Are They Now?

A-Flock-of-Seagulls-2069522This week at Slacker we’re celebrating all things 80’s & New Wave while our Slacker countdown, the 101 Greatest New Wave Songs cranks in the background. What can we say, we’re New Wave fans! Some folks here would even argue it was the greatest period ever in the storied history of Rock music. The hair, the synthesizers, the androgynous edge, the elevation of punk ethos and pop excess straight into outer space- what’s not to love?!

So in the spirit of celebration, we’re taking a rewind/fast forward look at some stand out New Wave artists to get a sense of what exactly they’ve been up to since their New Wave peak and where they are now. Today – A Flock Of Seagulls!

It’s hard not to immediately give a nod to THE standout New Wave haircut from the era – Mike Score’s gravity defying “Flock Of Seagulls Hairdo“, (some speculate the hairdo to be the true author of their single biggest hit “I Ran So Far Away“). The hairdo was intended to resemble an actual seagull and must’ve had only enough juice to fuel their self-titled hit first record, A Flock Of Seagulls – a concept album about the alien invasion of earth, with tracks about an alien abduction following a sequential story line. Sadly, subsequent albums like Listen and The Story Of A Young Heart failed to stir listeners or the charts and the band broke up soon after.

So fast forward- in 2002 their hit single “I Ran So Far Away” was featured in the hit video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice Citythe band played their final show with the original lineup in 2003 for  VH1’s “Bands Reunited” and as of 2013, Mike Score was continuing to play shows under the “A Flock Of Seagulls” banner, but as the only original member in the group. Whether a fan or a critic, it’s hard to classify the legacy of “A Flock Of Seagulls”-  are they relegated to being remembered as a joke band? Were they New Wave pioneers? Do modern listeners only grant them ironic appreciation?

Who cares?! We’re just glad A Flock Of Seagulls is a part of the New Wave story, because the story wouldn’t be the same without them. Oh yeah… and Mike Score is now bald. So there’s that.
