6/6/2013 - TOP 40 CHARTS WERE DESIGNED FOR YOUR MOM; THE NEW SLACKER EQ SCORE MEASURES WHAT MUSIC MEANS TODAY

TOP 40 CHARTS WERE DESIGNED FOR YOUR MOM; THE NEW SLACKER EQ SCORE MEASURES WHAT MUSIC MEANS TODAY

Weekly Slacker EQ Score Provides Unique Insight into Audience Engagement Based on Real-Time Activity and Data from Millions of Listeners

SAN DIEGO, CALIF – JUNE 6, 2013 – Slacker, the world’s most complete music service, is bringing the top 40 charts into the digital age with the Slacker EQ score. In a world where access to music is quickly trumping ownership, the Slacker EQ is the most accurate reflection of a song’s trending popularity and listener engagement in today’s world of streaming music. Slacker EQ scores will be released every Thursday, tracking the 40 most engaging tracks across multiple genres from the previous week, and will be available at blog.slacker.com/EQ.

A number from one to 100, the Slacker EQ score measures hundreds of millions of weekly data points to show how deeply users are engaging with a particular song, based on specific positive and negative actions, including:

  • Starts – the number of times a song was started on the Slacker service
  • Completes – the number of times a song was listened to in its entirety
  • Hearts – the number of times a user “hearts” a track, requesting to hear it more frequently
  • Shares – the number of times a user shares a track via Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Tumblr, Pinterest or email
  • Skips – the number of times a song is skipped before reaching completion
  • Changes – the number of times a user changes the station when a song plays
  • Bans – the number of times a song or artist is banned from playing again

“The majority of people stream music and old charting methods capture sales or basic streams which only tell a fraction of the story,” said Jack Isquith, Slacker’s senior vice president of content programming and strategic development. “As access to music trumps ownership for consumers, engagement quickly becomes the most important metric for what’s hot and trending. Slacker EQ provides fans, artists and labels a real-time understanding of not only what consumers are listening to, but how they’re interacting with music, and how their actions change over time.”

Do people choose to listen to the same songs dominating terrestrial radio airtime? Does an appearance on Saturday Night Live increase engagement with an artist? Does an artist’s exploits in the tabloids impact people’s affinity for a track? These are trends the Slacker EQ can help the industry decipher. It will rank the 40 most engaging songs across the Slacker service each week, alongside top 40 lists based on engagement for six genres, including Pop, Rock, Country, Hip Hop/R&B, Alternative/Indie and Electronic/Dance.

Slacker has also launched a station that counts down the 40 most engaging songs every week, available at: http://www.slacker.com/station/the-slacker-top-40

Only Slacker could deliver a metric as thorough as EQ. The most complete music service on Earth offers listeners the most options for interacting with music, including streaming radio and/or on-demand access to a massive library of more than 13 million songs, with new tracks added daily, often long before other services. A music guide and fine-tuning tools let listeners easily discover new music or add news, sports and talk content from ABC and ESPN. Slacker’s team of expert music curators also constantly update Slacker’s more than 200 genre and specialty stations so the music is always new, fresh and surprising.

Slacker is also the only digital music service that has billing and distribution deals with every major North American wireless provider, including Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular. In addition, Slacker is available in vehicles produced by major automotive manufacturers including Ford, GM, Chrysler Group, Acura, Honda, Scion, Subaru and Tesla.

5/8/12 - SLACKER LAUNCHES SHOWCASE STATION PROGRAMMED AND HOSTED BY SHAWN HOOK

SLACKER LAUNCHES SHOWCASE STATION PROGRAMMED AND HOSTED BY SHAWN HOOK

Emerging Canadian Artist Shares Personal Stories Behind the Music That Has Influenced Him Most

SAN DIEGO – May 8, 2012 – Slacker Inc. today launched the Shawn Hook Showcase, an exclusive station on Slacker Radio curated and hosted by the emerging singer- songwriter Shawn Hook. Highlighting the songs that inspire and influence him the most, Shawn Hook Showcase is now available in the Artist Showcase station category on Slacker applications for all major smartphones, the iPad and on the web at: http://www.Slacker.com/station/Shawn-Hook-Showcase.

Slacker was introduced to Shawn Hook in Toronto during Slacker Canadian Music Week 2012. After recording three “1-take” tracks that can be seen and heard on Slacker’s YouTube channel, they teamed and set up an impromptu performance for an unsuspecting crowd in the hotel lobby of Toronto’s Fairmont Royal York Hotel.

Slacker invited Shawn Hook to visit their studio to hand-program his own Artist Showcase station. Shawn performed several incredible acoustic performances in the studio and selected hundreds of his favorite songs for the station, while recording personal stories and candid commentary that can be heard throughout the station. Bands and artists on the Shawn Hook Showcase include Elton John, Jeff Buckley, Deadmau5, Beastie Boys and more. In addition, music from his debut album, Cosmonaut and the Girl, is also featured on the station – including Canadian Billboard Hot 100 single “Every Red Light.”

“When I was asked to put together my own station for Slacker Radio, I was really excited. I basically put together the playlist of my life – every song means something personal to me,” said Shawn Hook. “I remember where I was, who I was with and what I was doing the first time I heard each song. I guess that’s why we all love great music, and I can’t think of a better way to enjoy music than Slacker Radio.”

To watch exclusive performance videos from Shawn Hook’s time in the Slacker studios, as well as an impromptu performance of “Every Red Light” and additional performances during Canadian Music Week 2012, watch the Slacker video playlist at: http://bit.ly/ShawnHookSlackerRadio.

“When we connected with Shawn Hook at Canadian Music Week, we saw firsthand the raw talent he possesses,” said Scott Riggs, senior director of radio at Slacker. “We were excited to have Shawn create his own station on Slacker Radio and give his fans unique and personal insight into his life experiences and the music that shaped the artist he is today.”

Slacker Artist Showcase stations are hosted and curated by the artists, giving listeners insight into the musical influences and personal stories of teenage rebellion, family memories and career triumphs of their favorite musicians. Artist Showcase stations feature a diverse and growing array of genres, further emphasizing Slacker’s dedication to being the ultimate music discovery resource.

Artist Showcase stations can be enjoyed anywhere that Slacker is available: on all major smartphones, the iPad, in Ford vehicles with SYNC AppLink, connected home devices including Sonos and online at http://www.Slacker.com. Wherever they tune in, Slacker listeners have instant access to their favorite music, artist profiles, album reviews and album cover art. On-demand access to the Slacker music library is also available with Slacker Premium Radio. To get the free mobile application, simply direct your mobile web browser to www.Slacker.com.

About Shawn Hook
Shawn Hook’s EMI Music debut, Cosmonaut and the Girl, out on May 8, says a lot about the artist, his direction and the music. Blessed with a stratospheric vocal range, heard right off the bat on the lead track, “Planet Earth,” and particularly on “Rockstaria,” the pianist and guitarist from Nelson, British Columbia shot for the stars on this recording, adding modern electronic elements to his organic singer-songwriter base. The album, produced by Jon Levine (The Philosopher Kings, Nelly Furtado, Kreesha Turner), is a constellation of electro-spiked pop, like meteors of Paul McCartney and Elton John hurling through space collecting particles of One Republic and Muse. The first single, “Every Red Light,” is a pumping race to get to your girl, while new single “So Close” offers a more inspirational message and was recently featured in promo spots on Global Television for Kiefer Sutherland’s new hit show Touch.

About Flogging Molly
Founded in Los Angeles in 1997, Flogging Molly has always defied categorization. The infectious originality of their songs is a badge of honor and key to the band’s creativity, their urgency. They infuse punk rock with Celtic instruments—violin, mandolin and the accordion—and they merge blues progressions with grinding guitars and traditional Irish music. Theirs is a music of exile and rebellion, of struggle and history and protest. It’s music of a country torn down the middle, a deeply beautiful and wounded country that knows no quit, and Flogging Molly pays homage to that resolve in every note.

Nothing has mattered more to Flogging Molly than their new record, Speed of Darkness. Musically and lyrically, Flogging Molly has never sounded so mature or rousing, nor have the messages of alienation and hope behind their songs ever been so relevant. As the country struggled to stay afloat, the songs evolved in to odes to the working man and battle cries against the elite establishment that so quickly and callously cast him aside.

Slacker Launches Grunge Station in Honor of Nirvana’s Nevermind 20th Anniversary

‘Grunge: 20 Years Later’ Includes Exclusive Commentary by Slacker DJ Marco Collins

SAN DIEGO – September 7, 2011 – Slacker Inc. today launched Grunge: 20 Years Later in honor of the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s Nevermind. This radio station, hosted by legendary Seattle DJ Marco Collins, looks back on the grunge genre, its influencers and its legacy. Grunge: 20 Years Later is now available for free in the Slacker Spotlight section on leading smartphones, home entertainment devices and on the web at http://www.Slacker.com/Grunge20.

This station is hosted by Slacker Radio DJ Marco Collins, who had a legendary career as a DJ at “107.7 The End” in Seattle during the grunge explosion. He is known for his influence during the grunge era and he is still considered one of the great tastemakers and experts when it comes to breaking contemporary music. Marco provides unique first-person commentary and experience of the grunge movement on Slacker’s Grunge: 20 Years Later station as well as exclusive interviews from his archives with artists including Courtney Love, Chris Cornell, Mike McCready and more.

“In the 90s, I was thrown directly into a music scene destined to become a revolution,” said Marco Collins. “Outside of Seattle, the scene seemed enormous, but here in the Northwest, it was a close-knit community. Everyone knew each other. It was like a family. There were so many bands and a lot of unsung heroes. On this station, I tried not only to focus on the superstars but to highlight the seminal smaller bands.”

Marco Collins’ experiences have also been included in Mark Yarm’s “Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge” which is available today. “Everybody Loves Our Town” captures the grunge era in the words of the musicians, producers, managers, record executives, video directors, photographers, journalists, publicists, club owners, roadies, scenesters and hangers-on who lived through it.

“Marco provided invaluable insight into the scene in Seattle for the book and we are all thrilled to be launching the book in conjunction with the anniversary of Nevermind,” said Mark Yarm, author of “Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge.” “Marco is a true visionary in music and a testament to Slacker Radio’s dedication to programming expertly curated genre stations for their listeners.”

Slacker Radio Expands Artist-Curated Offerings With Three New Indie Showcase Stations

New Radio Stations Programmed and Hosted by Artists Ida Maria, Sondre Lerche and Matt Costa Now Available on Slacker

SAN DIEGO – July 14, 2011 – Slacker Inc. today expanded its artist showcase offerings with the launches of Ida Maria Radio, Sondre Lerche Radio and Matt Costa Radio stations. These three additions to Slacker’s Artist Showcase feature songs by each respective artist, music that inspired them as well as rich commentary by the artists themselves. Ida Maria, Sondre Lerche and Matt Costa Radio stations are now available for free in the Slacker Artist Showcase section at www.Slacker.com, on leading smartphones and the iPad.

Slacker Radio’s dedication to being the ultimate personalized radio and music discovery resource is emphasized by its growing collection of custom artist showcase stations, currently featuring such varied selections as the pop and club sensation Far East Movement, the chart topping Plain White T’s, current country star Justin Moore, rock favorites AFI and Jimmy Eat World and many more. Each artist brings with them their own music selections and hosted content creating an unparalleled experience both for existing fans and new listeners.

Each of the new Slacker Radio stations provides a different take on indie sound. Norwegian rocker Ida Maria is known for her smoky vocals and punk-inspired energy. Ida Maria’s music has been featured in commercial promotions for the FX TV show Louie and in television programs Grey’s Anatomy and MTV’s My Life As Liz. Her song “Oh My God” was also included in the music video game Rock Band 3. Ida is currently on tour promoting her sophomore album Katla.

“When I was growing up in Norway, I didn’t listen to the same music as the other kids and I was very shy,” said Ida Maria. “Now I realize that other kids have that same experience. Making my own Slacker Radio station lets me share my experience with others through music, what makes me love what I do.”

Behind the scenes footage of live performances as well as hosted sessions can be viewed by visiting www.YouTube.com/Slacker. Here, fans will get a close look at Ida Maria’s time in the studio with Slacker including footage from her live performances of “Bad Karma,” “Cherry Red” and “I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked.”

Singer-songwriter Sondre Lerche, also Norwegian, has been praised for his experimental and candid work. Sondre’s songs span genres and are heavily influenced by jazz, ‘80s pop and Brazilian music. He composed the majority of the music for the 2007 film Dan in Real Life. Sondre’s recently released self-titled album was recorded live and features artist Regina Spektor as a collaborator.

“Spending the day at Slacker Radio was like a dream come true for my 10-year-old self. I used to make my own radio shows when I was a kid and I still make a lot of playlists, so when they asked me to come by and make my own station, I was sold,” said Sondre Lerche. “All the songs I’ve chosen remind me of specific times and places so I could talk at great lengths about the things that come to mind when I play them. I’m a fan of the Slacker Radio format because it allows nerdy musicians like myself to indulge and share something more than just my own songs with music fans.”

Matt Costa, a folky acoustic artist out of Huntington Beach, California, was mentored by Tom Dumont of No Doubt and signed by Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records. His work has been featured in the films I Love You, Man and Marmaduke, the trailer for Youth in Revolt and iPhone advertisements. Matt has released three full-length albums including his most recent work, Mobile Chateau.

“Making a Slacker station let me share my stories and the stories of other artists through music,” said Matt Costa. “A lot of the music I have chosen is kind of old and I like to think about what was going on in the world and in a particular artist’s life that inspired him or her to make the music they did.”

Ida Maria, Sondre Lerche and Matt Costa Radio stations include commentary by the artists about the songs and artists that have influenced them the most. Each station includes songs by the artists along with hundreds of songs that inspired each artist.

“Slacker Radio’s Artist Showcase provides listeners of all genres with a full spectrum of music discovery from songs to autobiographies,” said Scott Riggs, Director of Radio at Slacker. “It connects listeners with their favorite artists by emphasizing that even the most influential songwriter was once and still is a fan of other artists.”

Slacker Artist Showcase is a unique station category that can be found on any Slacker Radio application. Ida Maria, Sondre Lerche and Matt Costa Radio stations can also be accessed directly on the web at: www.Slacker.com/IdaMaria, www.Slacker.com/SondreLerche and www.Slacker.com/MattCosta, respectively.

Whether listening on the web; an iPad; Windows Phone 7, Windows Mobile, Palm webOS, Android, iPhone or BlackBerry smartphones; a Slacker-enabled Sony TV or Blu- ray player (or any of the many available devices that support Slacker Radio); Slacker showcase, festival and tribute station listeners have instant access to artists’ favorite music, artist profiles, album reviews and album cover art. SAN DIEGO – December 2, 2010 – Far East Movement and Slacker, Inc. launches Far East Movement Radio, a station featuring songs from the Billboard chart-topping, electro/hip-hop quartet, as well as music from artists that have inspired their unique “Free Wired” sound and style. Far East Movement (also known as FM) blend elements of hip-hop, pop, electro and dance to create an original sound and a unique radio experience. Growing up together in Los Angeles, FM was influenced by the thriving downtown LA scene that included a wide array of musical styles.

“One genre doesn’t define us but rather an eclectic playlist ranging from Hip-Hop, Pop, Alternative, Dance, Electronic and even a little Country. It’s all about keeping it free wired, out of the box and open minded,” said Kev Nish, FM group member. “Far East Movement Radio on Slacker plays songs that inspire us now and ones that inspired us back in the day.”

The Far East Movement Artist Showcase station was programmed by group members Kev Nish, Prohgress, J-Splif, and DJ Virman. Pulling from the band’s eclectic background the station provides listeners with a selection of the group’s own music, as well as a mix of hundreds of hand-picked favorites from a wide array of the group’s influences including Nine Inch Nails, Outkast, Daft Punk, Guns N Roses, Al Green and MGMT. In addition to the group’s selections, each song from their latest album Free Wired is also programmed into the station.

“The Artist Showcase stations provide artists with a unique outlet to connect with their fans in a rich and engaging way,” said Scott Riggs, Director of Radio at Slacker. “Far East Movement is a great fit for this partnership providing Slacker listeners the opportunity to discover extraordinary insight into the group’s eclectic influences.”

Whether listening on the web; Windows Phone 7, Windows Mobile, Palm webOS, Android, iPhone or BlackBerry smartphones; a Slacker-enabled Sony TV or Blu-ray player (or any of the many available devices the support Slacker Radio); Far East Movement Radio listeners have instant access to the group’s favorite music along with artist profiles, album reviews and album cover art. About Far East Movement
Far East Movement has bridged the gap between underground party records and mainstream hip-hop and pop. Kev Nish, Prohgress, J-Splif, and DJ Virman have taken the Los Angeles club scene global, already having multiple world tours, numerous song placements on television and film, and a #1 song on Los Angeles radio before signing their record deal. In 2010, Far East Movement made their major-label debut with the single “Like a G6″ and the full-length album Free Wired. The single, “Like A G6″ peaked at #1 in October and returned to recapture the #1 position in November and has remained on the Billboard Hot 100 for last 15 weeks. The track has also soared on many other charts including the rap, pop, dance/club, ringtones and digital-download charts helping their latest album, Free Wired, debut in the Top 25.
