tony_soprano_sopranos-472x472James Gandolfini has died at the age of 51 while on vacation in Italy. The news comes as a terrible shock to the community who are collectively in mourning for the universally loved artist.

“It is with immense sorrow that we report our client, James Gandolfini, passed away today while on holiday in Rome, Italy,” managers Mark Armstrong and Nancy Sanders said in a joint statement. “Our hearts are shattered and we will miss him deeply. He and his family were part of our family for many years and we are all grieving.”

As the lead character Tony Soprano on HBO’s “The Sopranos” he played one of the most iconic roles in the history of television. Today, Slacker is paying tribute to this supremely talented character actor the best way we know how—through music.

The Sopranos received considerable attention for its creative use of music during critical scenes and especially during the closing credits. If you are one of the millions of die-hard Sopranos fans, there are certain songs that you will forever associate with pivotal scenes, episode, and moments in Tony Soprano’s life.

The Sound of the Sopranos features all of the music that was so prominently featured on the show—Slacker’s way of paying tribute to James Gandolfini’s legacy and work. Listen here with us as we mourn the loss of such an amazing talent and respected actor.

New Series “I Am the DJ” Debuts with Counting Crows

DJ-COUNTING-CROWS-472x472There is nothing better than personal music recommendations from people you trust- unless of course that person happens to be a famous musician.

Our new series “I Am the DJ” gives a glimpse into the music collection of some of our favorite artists as they showcase their favorite songs, biggest influences and specialized playlists. To debut the series, Slacker sat down with Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz to build an entire radio station comprised of his favorite songs.

Adam put together an audio journey through his influences and the emerging acts that he so passionately embraces on his Outlaw Roadshow project.  From Phoenix and Delta Kids to Pixies classics and even Naughty by Nature – the station is, much like Adam, an eclectic mix of various styles that mesh together perfectly.

Head over to   “I Am the DJ: Counting Crows” on Slacker and stay tuned for more artists coming soon!

Montreal’s Osheaga Music and Arts Festival Announces Lineup

osheaga music festival lineup This week, Montreal’s Osheaga Music and Arts Festival announced its much-anticipated final lineup and daily schedule. The 3-day festival, which takes place August 2-4 at Parc Jean Drapeau will welcome The Cure, Beck and Mumford and Sons as this year’s headliners. Other heavy hitters include Phoenix, Frank Ocean, Vampire Weekend, New Order, Imagine Dragons, The Lumineers, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and Alt-J.

With Montreal’s vibrant indie scene, Osheaga has always included home-grown talent to the roster, this year being Stars, Mac DeMarco, and We Are Wolves. Other notable Canucks who will be there include Tegan and Sara, Diamond Rings, Hollerado and k-os. Click on the poster to see the full lineup.

image04The Osheaga Music and Arts Festival began back in 2006 as a 2-day festival and has since grown to be the largest of its kind in Canada. It attracts music fans from across North America and Europe. Throughout the years it has featured some of the biggest names in music like Coldplay, The Black Keys, Arcade Fire, Eminem and Weezer.

The artists have come to love being part of the festival as well, having as much fun backstage as on stage. The catering of celebrity chef Chuck Hughes is always a huge hit!

Osheaga is truly a unique experience…Parc Jean Drapeau is located on the small island of Ile Ste-Hélène, adjacent to the island of Montreal, in the middle of the St-Lawrence river… getting there is easy, either by subway (called the metro), car, bus or bike.  The grounds of the park are filled with lush trees and little ravines…you wander through the woods to the various stages scattered throughout the park, checking out the art stations along the way. There is also a wide-open space where the 2 main stages are located and where the big name artists play…you can be a part of the action in the crowd or chillin’ up on the hill – listening to tunes, basking in the sun, taking in the beautiful Montreal cityscape in the background – either way there is no festival experience like it!

Five EDM Artists to Watch in 2013

Last year saw a massive surge of electronic dance music (EDM) to the front lines of mainstream popularity and 2013 has already proven the trend is not going anywhere. There has been an abundance of new releases and a massive collection of up-and-coming talent flooding the industry with impressive potential. The year is not even half over and we can’t even count how many young DJs and producers are headed for superstardom – but some have definitely stood out above the rest. Here are five EDM artists to keep an eye on this year.

Danny Avila

Danny-Avila

Genre: Progressive house

To get a residency in Ibiza is usually a career highlight for a DJ, but at the ripe old age of 17, Danny Avila has already scored a spot on the magical island, which caught the attention of everyone, including Fedde Le Grand and Tiesto – who calls him the “Spanish SUPER Talent.” The October release of his single “Breaking Your Fall,” and a new prime time spot for his radio show has given him a nice introduction to the US market. But it is the recent announcement that Avila’s upcoming residency at Las Vegas megaclub Hakkasan, which ranks him as the youngest resident DJ in Vegas history, that is sure to catapult him to stateside stardom.

Andrew Rayel

Andrew RayelGenre: Trance

When Armin Van Buuren, arguably one of the world’s most influential artists in dance music, says to pay attention to someone, its in your best interest to pay attention. So when Andrew Rayel’s track “How Do I Know” was named one of Van Buuren’s top 20 tracks of this past year, the trance producer cemented his name on the map.

Hot off the heels of another big hit “Aeon of Revenge,” several successful remixes and a few stops on the A State of Trance 600 tour circuit, Rayel has proved he is a rising star in Armada’s arsenal of young talent and definitely one to watch closely in 2013.

Zedd

ZeddGenre: Electro-House

He’s the first EDM artist to perform live on Letterman, one of MTV’s “artists to watch” for 2013, and he’s newly signed to Interscope records. Zedd may only have one full length album and a couple of EPs under his belt, but his resume is also not short – having remixed The Black Eyed Peas, Skrillex and Justin Bieber, where he co-produced  his hit “Beauty and a Beat.” To top it off, Zedd produced his buddy Lady Gaga’s ARTPOP album in its entirety. Not bad for a guy who is only 23.

Stardom seems inevitable for young talent and it is respectfully well deserved. Singles like “Spectrum” and “Clarity” show he not only is a rare talent but also knows how to work a room with a  bonafide dance floor hit.

Julian Jordan

Julian JordanGenre: Electro-house

They must be putting something in the water over there because the amount of Dutch DJs and Producers dominating the EDM genre is overwhelming (4 of the top 10 and 7 of the top 20 in DJ Mag’s infamous top 100 list are Dutch). Now newcomer Julian Jordan, under the guidance of his mentor Sander van Doorn,  is showing the EDM world there is another Dutch star in the making.

His track, “Rock Steady” climbed to the top 10 on Beatport charts with ease and his collaboration with Sander “Kangaroo” was a dancefloor favorite worldwide. Both have earned Jordan the support and attention of industry heavyweights. We can expect some massive synths and pumping basslines from Jordan in 2013.

Robert Delong

robert delongGenre: Experimental Dance

One of 2013’s fastest rising electronic artists is Los Angeles based Robert DeLong, who’s experimental dance/ alternative electronic style has gained massive amounts of buzz. Utilizing MIDI interfaces and mixing live while he performs, DeLong plays keyboards, drum pads, drum set, laptops, and even gaming controllers, which showcases his truly innovative style of electronic music. With the release of his debut EP “Global Concepts,” and a spot to perform at Coachella this year – 2013 is looking like a sure bet for Robert DeLong to become a star.
