In 2013, there’s just no question about the biggest song of the year. New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde was just 15 years old when she recorded “Royals.” The song was posted to Soundcloud as a free download back in November 2012, and got an official release in March. It finally hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on October 2nd, just a month before Lorde’s 17th birthday, and stayed there for nine weeks. Whether it’s her young age, the song’s anti-commercialism message, or its stripped down production, “Royals” is a unique phenomenon, and just a really good song. “Royals” by Lorde is Slacker’s Song of the Year.
